Selenite
Selenite is named after the Greek Moon-goddess, because of the moonlike refraction of the light through the stone. The effect is conciliatory and connective between lovers. Selenite crystals are semiprecious stones, with a special radiation. They are linked to the sixth Chakra (the Third Eye) as well as the seventh, the Crown Chakra. In particular the white or transparent crystals offer a beneficial effect.
Selenite, the stone with angels vibrations is becoming increasingly rare. Our fantastic Selenite from Morocco products are a great beauty, and are estimated by many on their value. Yet our Selenite is not expensive, especially when compared to the quality. The name is given to larger translucent selenite gypsum crystals (CaSO4 · 2 H2O). Selenite is formed by oxidation of calcareous clay deposits, among other things. In these deposits is pyrite present. By weathering (oxidation) of pyrite, sulfate ions (SO42-) originate. Yet the oxidation of the clay will acidify, which will dissolve the lime (calcium dissolves in acidic environments). This will allow the Ca 2 + ions (calcium) to be released, which then will react with the sulfates to gypsum. Selenite is sometimes confused with Quartz (SiO2) because they are very similar in appearance. They are, however, easy to distinguish because the surface of Selenite can be scratched with your finger nail. With Rock Crystal this is not possible, because this mineral is much harder. The name Selenite comes from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon.
